Thriller Mood Board

One of the most iconic images from one of the most iconic thriller films: Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs.
This shows the crime and 'Detective' thriller films. Probably the most well known detective thriller: Seven (Somerset and Mills).
Dark ally ways are a common feature feature in the thriller genre. It allows the predator to follow and attack their victim in the dark, where no one will see...anything!!!
The Biohazard symbol I decided to include in this mood board as it is a commonly used storyline in thriller films.
Iconic image from 'The Day After Tomorrow'. This is one of many of films from the sub-genre of the disaster thriller.
The Techno thriller which is....I, Robot. In these sort of thrillers suspense is used in which the manipulation of sophisticated technology plays a prominent part.

An iconic scene from one of the most famous thriller films, Psycho (1960).
This image yet again shows that 'detectives' are common characters to be scene in thrillers.

Horror Mood Board

I chose to include this legendary image from the film 'the exorcist' as it is,
iconic to the horror genre of film. Also the conventions of: dark lighting, silhouetted figure, night time etc all are common sights in a horror film.
This image of a knife with blood covering it, represents that basically all horror films include violence and lots of death!!!!! Usually a murder who will inflict pain upon their victim uses such objects as a knife.
A dark forest is also seen in many horror movies as a place of isolation where the victims can run but can't hide. As well the glowing moon shows the supernatural side to horror movies such as the werewolves coming out when there is a full moon .
This is iconic image from the film: 'the grudge'.  I chose to use this image as it shows the 'monster' silently waiting behind their victim, ready to attack when least suspected!!!
This famous image from the classic film known as 'the omen' shows the religious symbolism which is used in many horror films. Also this is in a graveyard which is yet again a common scene to have in a horror film.
One of the most iconic 'monsters' from a horror film: Michael from the Halloween franchise. Masks are commonly used in the horror genre as it creates suspense of who the person is behind the mask.
One of the most well known horror monsters: Frankenstein.
One of the first horrors ever made during the german expressionism period Nosferatu. This is Gothic Horror.

Romantic Comedy Mood Board

I chose to use a image of Hugh Grant in my Romantic Comedy mood board as he is seen as one of the main men in Hollywood to be seen in a Romantic Comedy film (especially British romcoms). He has been in such films as: Love Actually, Bridget Jone's Diary, Notting Hill and many many more..........
I used an image of a rose, as it represents 'love' and is commonly seen in Romantic Comedies as a romantic gesture.
Sandra Bullock has been in many Romantic Comedy films and is seen as a leading lady for these types of roles. She is seen is American romcoms such as: The Proposal and Two Weeks Notice (where she stars alongside Hugh Grant).
The wine glass or 'dinner scene' is stereotypically seen in romcom's.

The 'love making' scene is yet again a stereotypical scene to be in a Romantic Comedy. It is always one of the main scenes, as it shows the 'romance' side to the film.
I have this image of a couple as 'the couple' are the part of a romantic comedy as there is always a couple, who the storyline revolves around. Often though the two people are single before usually 'bumping' into each-other during the film and then falling in love.

Usually there is a city scene at night during a romcom. Also London seems to be one of the main places for these films to be set, so i chose this picture of Big Ben at night to represent both of these.

The countryside also seems to be a popular location to a Romantic Comedy to be set.

180 Degree Rule

Match on action is a component of seamless editing where a point of action is shot from different angles and cut at the point of action creating a match.

example: passing an object to someone

You also have to make sure of eye line match - which is making sure the eyes of both characters from a shot reverse shot match in terms of locations on the screen.

This schematic shows the axis between two characters and the 180° arc on which cameras may be positioned (green). When cutting from the green arc to the red arc, the characters switch places on the screen.

Preliminary Task:
As part of the project I needed to carry out an preliminary task to show my abilities of being able to use a camera and to show that I am able to follow and carry out one of the basic rules in film making: the 180 Degree Rule. This task was done in one of the media lessons. From carrying out this task I was able to gain new skills in camera work,  as it gave me first hand experience of how to create the 180 degree rule while working with actors.  When doing the preliminary task i had to edit in action meaning,  i had to pause the camera when ready to film from a different angle, to save time. The task involved a basic scene of a student walking down a corridor, opening a door, being seen from the other side of the door, sitting down to have a conversation with a fellow student, who then passes an object to the other person.

Metz Theory

Christian Metz explored the development of genre film and suggested that genres pass through four phases of existence. These for stages are:
  1. The experimental
  2. The classic
  3. The parody
  4. The deconstruction
1) 'Experimental' means the phase of early films which is explored and experimented with horror themes in it's narratives. Because they helped formalize the narrative conventions of horror film in its earliest phase.

2)'Classic' means the phase of films which is established the narrative conventions of the horror genre in its most successful and defining period.

3) 'Parody' means films that have mimicked the horror genre in some form of comical way.

4) 'Deconstruction' means films which have taken the generic elements of the horror genre and amalgamated  them into varying sub-genres.
